Virender Sehwag weighs in on Virat Kohli’s batting position at T20I World Cup

Indian batter Virat Kohli playing for RCB in the ongoing Indian Premier League (2024) has been in a spectacularly beautiful form, dishing out effective knocks for the team. On Sunday, Virat Kohli was one of the impactful players in helping RCB overhaul GT’s challenging total of 200. Kohli made an unbeaten 70, taking the team to a nine-wicket win with four overs to spare.

Virat Kohli continues to be the highest run-gatherer in the IPL this season, having scored four half-centuries and one century. Seeing Virat Kohli in his straps, numerous opinions have been trickling in suggesting Virat Kohli should open the batting alongside Indian skipper Rohit Sharma at the upcoming T20I World Cup 2024.

However, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has said Kohli should continue to bat at his usual position, which is no.3. Sehwag also cited the example of Sachin Tendulkar, who changed his batting position at the ODI World Cup 2007.

“If I were in that team, I wouldn't send him to open. I'll play him at 3. Captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal will open, and Kohli will continue to bat at no.3. The middle-overs approach is his headache, he knows if there's an early dismissal, he can take care of powerplays. If the wicket falls late, it's the captain and the coach's responsibility to tell him to keep the momentum intact. A player has to do this,” Sehwag stated on Cricbuzz.

“Sachin Tendulkar also left his opening role to bat at no.4, and carried the momentum in that role. He batted at no.4 in the 2007 World Cup. Even he didn't like to bat in the middle-order, but he had to do that for the team. If your team has two good openers and you are asked to bat at 3, you have to do that. You have to carry the momentum that the openers have set. I don't think Virat Kohli will be too bothered," he said.
