“I think they underestimated our team”: Maheesh Theekshana after SL’s win over ENG
It’s been a classy comeback from Sri Lanka after they thrashed England by eight wickets on Thursday at MA Chidambaram Stadium to record their back-to-back wins to advance themselves into the points table. England’d defeat against Sri Lanka has put them into a precarious situation as they are running out of chances to make their qualification into the semi-final. England have been on the losing streak as this was their third consecutive defeat of the tournament. Talking about the match, England didn’t have the momentum in their batting as they kept losing their wickets in a quick succession. Even the likes of Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone and Joe Root too couldn’t make any difference. Credit to Sri Lanka as well for the way they led their bowling attack with bowlers Lahiru Kumara, Angelo Mathews and Kasun Rajitha chipping in with three, and two wickets each to dismantle England completely. Speaking during the post-match press conference, Maheesh Theekshana asserted that England underestimated Sri Lanka.
“I think they underestimated our team because we also lost three games and we only won against Netherlands. I think they underestimated us. That’s why the result went our way because we backed our strength, we went with a simple plan, so that’s why we won the game today,” said Theekshana.
Sri Lanka with their win over England have brought their hopes back of making it to the semi-final, however, they will be wary of the challenges lying ahead as other teams are also surging with their performances. Sri Lanka are currently at the fifth position in the points table with their two wins out of five matches.
