“I can understand the umpire making the decision”: CSK coach on Jadeja’s dismissal for obstructing the field

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings are alive in the race for playoffs after registering their victory over Rajasthan Royals on Sunday at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad anchored the team’s chase with his 42 off 41 unbeaten. But, during CSK’s chase, there was an unusual moment when allrounder Ravindra Jadeja was given out for obstructing the field.

Jadeja was batting alongside skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad as they both became the victims of miscommunication, leading to Jadeja’s wicket. Ravindra Jadeja sprinting out of the crease was denied second run by Ruturaj Gaikwad, meanwhile, RR wicketkeeper Sanju Samson threw the ball towards bowler’s end that hit Jadeja. RR appealed and third umpire agreed, ruling in favour of Rajasthan.

Jadeja became the third player in IPL history to be given out for obstructing the field. Other two batters to have been adjudged out for obstructing the field are Yusuf Pathan and Amit Mishra. After the match, CSK coach Mike Hussey gave his take on Jadeja’s dismissal.

"Well, I have only had time to sort of look closely at it. He did try and turn around, so I guess that's changing the angle. But he didn’t change angle while he was running straight. I can see both sides of the story. I can see a story where he had to turn around, so he changed his angle a bit,” Mike Hussey said during the post-match press conference.

“But he didn't try and change while he was running back towards crease. I can understand the umpire making the decision if I’m being honest. The rule says you can't change your line. Maybe it was a fair call. I am not sure. I need to have a closer look at it,” Hussey added.
