A plethora of records was broken during West Indies' clash against Afghanistan in the last group stage match of the ongoing T20I World Cup 2024 on Sunday at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. Nicholas Pooran made history in the T20I World Cup with his destructive batting prowess, setting a new benchmark for highest individual innings of the ongoing T20I World Cup 2024.

He surpassed USA’s Aron Jones, who scored 94 unbeaten against Canada, to set a new record. Pooran scored 98 runs. His record-breaking innings not only showcased his immense talent but also underlined his power-hitting abilities.

In addition to his record-breaking score, Nicholas Pooran overtook Chris Gayle for most sixes by a West Indies player in Men’s T20Is. Pooran blasted eight sixes during his innings as he now has 128 sixes against Chris Gayle’s 124. West Indies’ massive total of 218/5 was the highest posted by any team in the ongoing T20I World Cup, overtaking Sri Lanka’s 201/6 against Netherlands.

In the powerplay, West Indies scored 92 runs, beating the record of Netherlands who hammered 91 against Ireland during the T20I World Cup in 2014. Pooran also came in level with Indian legend Yuvraj Singh’s record of 36 runs in an over. Pooran took the liking to Afghanistan pacer Azmatullah Omarzai plundering him for 36 runs during the 4th over of the powerplay.
