AUS vs IND: Persistent rainfall doesn't allow any outcome; 3rd Test ends in draw
The third Test match between Australia and India culminated in a draw after persistent rainfall on the final day on Wednesday in Brisbane. Weather conditions ensured that little play was possible on day five, and the match ultimately concluded without a result.
The fifth day of the match began with India adding eight runs to their overnight score as they reached 260 in their first innings before being bowled out. Later, Australia declared their innings at 89/7 in (18) overs. The declaration was seen as an attempt by Australia to push for a result, but the continuous rainfall didn't allow any outcome.
The rain meant that play was delayed, only a brief window of play in morning was possible before the rain interrupted the proceedings. India managed to reach 8/0 in 2.1 overs in their chase of 275. However, the rain did not relent, and no further play was possible after that brief interval.
Earlier in the match, Australia had put on a solid performance in their first innings after being asked to bat. The hosts posted an impressive total of 445 runs, thanks to key contributions from Steve Smith and Travis Head, who both smashed their centuries. In reply, India faced a tough challenge against the Australian bowlers but managed to put up a valiant effort.
India, somehow, managed to score 260 runs in their first innings. Despite losing wickets consistently, they fought hard and ensured they avoided the follow-on, which was a crucial milestone in the match. Their ability to avoid the follow-on gave them a glimmer of hope for a comeback, but the persistent rain ultimately hampered any chance of setting up an exciting finish. Both sides will now go into the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne with the five-match series levelled at 1-1.
