Sri Lanka registered a hard-fought thrilling 2-wicket victory against Pakistan on Thursday in the semi-final of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 to advance to the final of the tournament where they will face India on September 17. Kusal Mendis’ 91-run knock followed by Charith Asalanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama’s (49*) and (48) helped Sri Lanka beat Pakistan. There was the moment in the match when Sri Lanka needed 6 runs off 2 balls but Charith Asalanka held his nerve to take the team over the line. Talking about the match, Pakistan had opted to bowl after winning the toss with Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam losing their wickets cheaply. But Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmad’s (86*) and (47) took the team to the total of (252) in (42) overs. Opener Abdullah Shafique too provided a big boost with his 52-run score. Match had been reduced to 42-over a side due to intermittent rainfall. This defeat is a big reminder to Pakistan about their performance ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.
