Former Indian cricketer’s remarks on Ashwin’s inclusion into India’s World Cup squad
Injury to India’s boisterous all-rounder Axar Patel has put India into a big fix as World Cup is nearing fast with Axar Patel yet to make a full recovery from quadricep injury that he suffered during Asia Cup 2023. In the absence of Axar Patel, India called up veteran R Ashwin for the three-match ODI series against Australia. Ashwin has done fairly well in the first two matches of the series which has given good indications for his inclusion into India’s World Cup squad if Axar Patel fails to make complete recovery. Axar Patel is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru undergoing recovery.
In the last two matches, Ashwin has taken four wickets with his impressive bowling attack. It looks quite certain that Ashwin may find a place into India’s World Cup squad if Axar Patel is not fully fit to play the World Cup. Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar too is of the belief that Ashwin can make it to the squad if Axar is not fit.
“The way he has bowled in the last two matches, I think he has made the cut for the World Cup squad. If there is even a hint of doubt on Axar Patel’s fitness, whether he’ll be completely fit for the entire World Cup; because any injury can be a recurring one and he needs to be careful. if the team management think they can’t take that chance with Axar because it is the World Cup and everyone wants their squad to be 100 percent fit; so if there are any doubts then Ashwin could make a comeback,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
