World Cup 2023: Australia and South Africa gear up for a thrilling showdown

In what is being looked at as a fierce rivalry, South Africa and Australia will be locking horns in the semi-final (2) of the ongoing World Cup 2023 on Thursday at Eden Gardens. Both teams have shone with imposing performances in the tournament as they hope to pose hard-hitting challenges to each other. This match will decide their fate as to which team advances to the final. Both teams have lodged seven victories each from their nine group-stage games each. It’s been vastly impressive campaign from both teams. Australia, recording two back-to-back defeats, bounced back strongly to not lose any further group stage clashes. Australia suffered defeats against India and South Africa respectively. In Australia’s encounter against South Africa, they had been handed a 134-run defeat by the proteas but Australia have made huge improvement since then. South Africa, meanwhile, lost to India and a surprise loss against Netherlands. 

Australia have shifted their gears since their two early defeats as they are riding high on confidence with their seven straight victories. Glenn Maxwell has been the run machine for Australia alongside David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith. South Africa are powered by the likes of in-form Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller. Both teams have developed into the most competitive sides over the course of the tournament as they hope to outplay each other in this crucial battle. Their fate for the final spot will be sealed on Thursday as it is a very significant match for both teams. Both sides have met each other in (109) ODI matches with South Africa having (55) wins while Australia having (50) wins. Three matches ended in draw while one match ended in no result.
