Rahul Dravid provides clarity on Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion for Afghanistan T20Is
Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan’s absence from India’s T20I squad against Afghanistan drew a lot of attention as to why they weren’t incorporated into India’s squad despite the T20I World Cup around the corner. Earlier, there had been reports floating around indicating that both couldn’t be selected due to disciplinary issues.
However, Indian head coach Rahul Dravid cleared the air surrounding Kishan’s selection while quashing the disciplinary reports. Dravid said that Ishan Kishan requested for a break which was agreed upon.
“No Absolutely not (disciplinary issue). Ishan Kishan was not available for selection. Ishan requested for a break in South Africa, which we agreed to. We supported it. He has not yet made himself available for selection. When he is available, he will play domestic cricket and make himself available for selection," Dravid said on the eve of India's first T20I in Mohali.
Dravid also shed light on Iyer’s exclusion from the squad by asserting that due to enormous competition, Iyer missed out on selection for the series against Afghanistan. Dravid emphasised that Iyer had also missed out for the T20I series against South Africa.
“Certainly, in Shreyas Iyer’s case, there is absolutely no disciplinary reason for his non-inclusion. It’s just that he missed out. There were a lot of batsmen in the team. Shreyas missed out, he didn’t play the T20Is in South Africa as well, if you noticed. They are a lot of batsmen and it’s not easy to fit everyone. So, absolutely, there is no disciplinary reasons at all. At least I didn’t discuss such things with the selectors,” added the 50-year-old.
