Laser-focused Pope and Hartley’s brilliance in England’s monumental victory
England produced an extraordinarily exceptional performance to surprise India with their eye-catching 28-run win in the first Test match on Sunday in Hyderabad. Ollie Pope playing one of the best innings of his career laid the foundation for a memorable victory for England.
Pope's 196 helped England set a passable total of 231 for India to win, but debutant spinner Tom Hartley halted India's chase with his tremendous spell claiming seven wickets to bowl out India for 202. This is for the first time that India have lost a Test match at home after taking a first innings lead in excess of 100.
In the past 46 Test outings at home, India had only lost three times, but this defeat takes the toll to four, making it a big urgency for the host to step up.
India in their chase didn't get the crucial partnerships to take the host to victory line as their top-order batters failed to make their impact. Lower middle-order batters KS Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin stitched a partnership of 78 that gave India some hope to gradually return to victory, but debutant Hartley took out Bharat to reduce all hopes of India’s victory. R Ashwin was stumped as India went into a crumbling mode to lose the game.
