With regular skipper Rohit Sharma missing the first Test, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead India in the first Test match of the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, starting in Perth on Friday (November 22). Since the 2014-15 season, Australia have been unable to overcome India, who have come out victorious in the past four BGT assignments. Stepping up to lead India in the opener, Bumrah feels that bowlers are tactically better to lead the team as he cited the examples of Pat Cummins and Kapil Dev.

“I am one of the advocates for fast bowlers. I don’t know what has happened in the past but I obviously have been a fan of bowlers (taking up leadership role). I obviously feel that tactically are quite smart. There are many examples. In Australia, Pat has done a phenomenal job. He has got a lot of success. There are a lot of models in the past as well. In India, Kapil Dev did a fabulous job. Hopefully a start of a new tradition," Bumrah said during the press conference.

Bumrah also gave a crucial update on Mohammed Shami, who recently made his return to competitive cricket.

“Shami bhai has started to play cricket, and obviously, he is an integral part of this team. I'm sure the management is also keeping a keen eye (on him). Hopefully, things fall in place and you might see him here as well,” said Bumrah.

Speaking on the playing XI, Bumrah said, ”We have finalised our playing XI and you will get to know tomorrow morning before the start of the match," Bumrah said.
