“It will be 5-0 for England”: Former England spinner’s big claim
England skittled India by 28 runs in the first Test match of the five-match series, taking an early lead of 1-0 to assert their dominance against India in India. England players Tom Hartley and Ollie Pope emerged with splendid performances with ball and bat respectively to lift the side to an aggressive victory.
Tom Hartley returned with seven wickets, while Ollie Pope played a blazing knock of 196 to assist the side record their most talked about victory. Former England spinner Monty Panesar has claimed for England to whitewash the series if they continue to play the way they are playing. It remained quite astounding to see India lose even after having taken first innings lead in excess of 100. India were in the chase of 231, which remained quite gettable until Tom Hartley wrecked havoc in India’s batting lineup.
“If Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley continue to play like this it will be a whitewash, it will be 5-0 for England. It can happen if Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley play like this,” Monty Panesar told ANI.
“It is a very big victory, no one even imagined this was even possible. Everyone thought that England would lose after a 190 deficit but Ollie Pope had a brilliant inning one of the best innings we have seen in a long time and Rohit Sharma was clueless,” he said.
India’s record in Test at home has been nothing sort of great, but their defeat in the first game will compel them to do a lot of thinking before they meet England in the second Test beginning February 2nd in Visakhapatnam.
