In a thrilling contest in the first ODI between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, Sri Lanka had the upper hand with 42-run win in a high-scoring match at Pallekele Internatinal Stadium on Friday. The match witnessed exceptional performances from both sides, with batsmen showcasing their prowess on the pitch. However, it was Sri Lanka's Pathum Nissanka who remained the standout performer with his double century.
Asked to bat, Sri Lanka displayed their intent with the bat to dominate the proceedings, with openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando scoring (210*) and (88) respectively. Nissanka led the charge with a masterful display of batting prowess. He unleashed a flurry of boundaries and sixes in his eye-catching knock. Down the order, Sadeera Samarawickrama scored (45) to add more pressure on Afghanistan as Sri Lanka put out a total of (381) in (50) overs.
Chasing a difficult total, Afghanistan led a spirited chase fueled by outstanding centuries from Azmatullah Omarzai (149*) and Mohammad Nabi (136), mounting pressure on Sri Lanka. Despite centuries, it still remained a daunting task for Afghanistan with Sri Lankan bowlers applying continuous pressure on Afghanistan.
