MS Dhoni speaks on respect

India’s world-cup winning skipper MS Dhoni is characterised by his exemplary leadership skills and his great composure, making him the prominent figure in the Indian cricket. MS Dhoni remains the only Indian skipper to have led the team to T20I World Cup victory (in 2007), ODI World Cup victory (in 2011) and Champions Trophy (2013).

After having retired from International cricket, MS Dhoni plays for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL where he has led the team to five title victories, becoming the most successful captain at the IPL. Recently, MS Dhoni talked about respect while stating that the central core of respect and leadership is established through your actions.

“Loyalty has a lot to do with the respect factor. When you talk about the dressing room, unless the support staff or players respect you, it is difficult to get that loyalty. It is actually about what you are doing and not about what you are speaking. You may not actually speak anything but your conduct can earn that respect," said MS Dhoni during an event in Mumbai.

“I always felt that earning respect (as a leader) is important as it does not come with the chair or rank. It comes with your conduct. People are insecure at times. Sometimes, even if the team believes in you, you are actually the first person who will not believe in you.”

“To sum it up, don’t try to command respect but earn it, as it is very organic. Once you have that loyalty then the performance too will follow,” said Dhoni.
