NZ vs AUS 1st Test day 2 stumps: Australia in command as New Zealand remain in doldrum
Australia on day two, on Friday, remained in total control of the first Test match against New Zealand being played at Basin Reserve. Australia dismissed New Zealand for (179) in their first innings with Nathan Lyon striking with four scalps. Josh Hazlewood took two wickets to paralyse New Zealand. Australia, riding high on the back of a dazzling 174-run knock from Cameron Green, got to (383) in their first innings.
An audacious last-wicket partnership of (116) between Green and Josh Hazlewood played a supreme role in keeping Australia out of trouble. Australia refrained from imposing follow-on as they lost Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne to New Zealand’s skipper Tim Southee’s raging spell in their second innings. Glenn Phillips’ combative 71-run knock saved New Zealand from slumping to a under par total.
At the close of the play on day two, Australia were 13/2 with Usman Khawaja and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon unbeaten on (5) and (6) respectively. Australia are leading by (217) runs, fading New Zealand’s prospects of winning a Test match over Australia in 24 Tests this century.
