"There's a big difference playing in the IPL and playing for your country”: Sunil Gavaskar on Hardik Pandya’s selection in WC squad

India unveiled their T20I World Cup squad on Tuesday, with Rohit Sharma set to lead the side at the world event. The squad, which registered the axing of few notable players, saw allrounder Hardik Pandya being appointed vice captain of the team despite his dull showing in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

On the whole, Pandya has not been in his perfect form in IPL so far, having scored 197 runs, and claimed four wickets in last ten games his team - Mumbai Indians - has played. But, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has backed Hardik Pandya, opining he will be in a different form while playing for India.

"There's a big difference playing in the IPL and playing for your country. Playing for your country brings out something different in every player and Hardik Pandya will be a different player," said Gavaskar on Sports Today.

"He's had to face a lot of issues in this particular tournament (IPL), he's handled it quite well. When he goes overseas and has to play for India, I think he will be in a completely different frame of mind.

"And that's going to be a much more positive frame of mind than maybe what we have seen here in this tournament. So, Hardik Pandya will make a contribution with both bat and ball in this tournament," added Gavaskar.

Hardik Pandya has faced an enormous amount of criticism since his appointment as the skipper of Mumbai Indian replacing regular captain Rohit Sharma ahead of IPL 2024. It’s been hugely challenging for Pandya to be coping up with the ire from fans that in some ways has dwindled his performance as well. Every time Pandya has come out to the field he has been booed by MI fans. Nonetheless, Hardik Pandya’s abilities, seeing his previous performances, have been unquestionable.
