“To even compare with him”: Ruturaj Gaikwad’s swashbuckling remarks on Kohli
Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad recently expressed that filling the shoes of recently retired Virat Kohli at no.3 in T20 internationals will be a challenging task. Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli, who has been a cornerstone of India’s T20 setup for years, announced his retirement from T20Is at the end of T20I World Cup 2024.
His retirement leaves a significant gap in the team, one that Gaikwad accepts will be difficult to fill. However, Gaikwad is focused on contributing to India’s success, whichever position he is asked to play.
“This is a big topic and I think it’s not the right point to think about it. To even compare with him (Kohli) or try to fill in his shoes is relatively very tough and very hard,” Gaikwad said ahead of 3rd T20I between India vs Zimbabwe.
“As I had said in the IPL as well, it is difficult to fill my best shoes as well. Definitely, you want to start your career, you want to start the way you want, you want to play your own game. So that’s the priority right now. Focus on one game, focus on how you can contribute towards the team in whichever position you play and make sure you are on the winning side more often than not,” he added.
Following India’s title victory at T20I World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirements from T20Is.
