Addressing his first press conference on Monday since taking over as Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir shed light on the future of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gambhir endorsed both the stars, keeping the doors open for their involvement at the ODI World Cup 2027, should their fitness level be up to the mark.

Gambhir believes that there is a lot of cricket left in both the stars, having a lot of potential to contribute significantly to team’s success. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bowed out of T20 international recently following India’s title victory at the T20I World Cup 2024. Gambhir also highlighted the importance of upcoming Champions Trophy and Australia tour.

"I think they have shown what they can deliver on the big stage, whether it's the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup," Gambhir said.

"One thing I can be very clear of is that both of those guys have a lot of cricket left in them. More importantly, with the Champions Trophy and a big tour to Australia, obviously they would be motivated enough," Gambhir noted.

"Hopefully, if they can keep their fitness, the 2027 World Cup as well," Gambhir said.

As of now, India will be touring Sri Lanka for the white-ball series, involving a three-match ODI series and a three-match T20I series.
