Shami ready to return to action

Indian pace ace Mohammed Shami, according to a report in ESPNcricinfo, is gearing up for a significant comeback after being on the sidelines due to an ankle injury that has kept him out of action since the ODI World Cup last year.

Following the ankle injury, Shami has missed a substantial amount of cricket, including key international fixtures. Shami is expected to be ready for the team for the home Test series against Bangladesh in September.

In recent weeks, there has been a positive development as Shami has started bowling in nets. His progress has been closely monitored and selectors have also been briefed about Shami’s progress.

A decision, whether Shami should play at least one of the Duleep Trophy matches to prove his fitness, is yet to be taken. Shami is currently in the final stages of his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Ahead of India’s tour of Sri Lanka, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had said that Shami had resumed bowling in nets.

"There are so many Tests coming. We will need some depth. Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj have been around for a while, these are the obvious ones. But there will be some conversation around it. Got a lot of first-class cricket coming up so we can build guys up like that,” Agarkar had said.

India, in their home season are set to play two Tests against Bangladesh and three Tests against New Zealand and even if Shami fails to play some or all of India’s home matches, he will have enough time to get into the rhythm for the tour of Australia.
