“I’m not going to defend Virat Kohli”: former Indian cricketer’s views on Kohli’s struggle against spin
Batting talisman and Indian star Virat Kohli faced an uncharacteristic struggle against spin in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Kohli found himself at odds with the Sri Lankan spinners, particularly in conditions that favoured turn and grip.
Throughout the series, Sri Lanka's spinners consistently troubled Kohli, not allowing him to play freely. Kohli, who typically manoeuvres the ball with outmost focus, seemed out of sync, failing to play any noteworthy innings. Kohli was repeatedly outfoxed by Lankan spinners with huge turn and spin. Giving his views on Kohli’s soft dismissals, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik was outright in his views, saying it was the difficult pitch to bat on.
"It's been a tough pitch to play spin in this series, let's admit that first. Be it Virat Kohli, be it Rohit Sharma, or be it anyone else. With the slightly semi-new ball between overs about 8 to 30, it's been hard work.
"It's nothing to worry about. Not too many pitches work that way, but it's been a tough pitch to play spinners. I'm not going to defend Virat Kohli here, but I can tell you that playing spin was very hard," said Karthik on Cricbuzz.
Across his three innings, Virat Kohli recorded the scores of (24), (14) and (20) respectively, which was quite unexpected of him. To compound the problems, India also lost the series, failing to win either of the last two ODIs.
