"It's going to be a competitive series”: Ricky Ponting makes early BGT prediction

The upcoming Border-Gavaskar-Trophy series between Australia and India is set to be one of the most consequential ones as it carries extra weight, playing a crucial role in determining the finalists for the World Test Championship (WTC).

India and Australia, both giants of Test cricket, will be vying not just for the BGT title but also for a spot in the WTC final. Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting, meanwhile, has given an early verdict as to who will come out victorious in the highly competitive series. Both teams are already aware that the outcome in this series could shape their journey in the WTC.

"It's going to be a competitive series and as I said I think Australia's got a bit of a point to prove against India in Australia on the back of what's happened the last two series here," Ponting said on the ICC Review.

For the first time in almost 32 years, this time the high-profile Border-Gavaskar-Trophy will have five games. Australia will have a lot to play for as they have not beaten India in last ten years, having lost all four BGT series.

"We are back to five Tests as well, which is the other really important thing about this series. It’s only been four Tests the last couple of times. Five tests, I think everyone's really excited by that and I don't know if there'd be too many drawn games. I'm obviously going to tip Australia to win and I'm never going to tip against Australia. There will be a draw somewhere and there will be some bad weather somewhere, so I'm going to say 3-1 to Australia,” he said.

The series will get underway from November 22 with the first game in Perth. For the second Test, which will be a day-night game, starting December 6, both sides will be moving to Adelaide.
