Brendon McCullum calls Buttler England’s greatest white-ball player

England’s newly appointed white-ball head coach Brendon Mccullum has hailed England’s white-ball skipper Jos Buttler by calling him one of the greatest white-ball players in England’s cricket history. Buttler has been ruled out of England's three-match T20I series against Australia, starting on September 11. He also remains doubtful for the five-match ODI series against Australia.

Buttler was sidelined following a calf injury. In Buttler’s absence, Phil Salt will step up to lead the side. Buttler has been a raging force for England in their batting attack, having made invaluable contributions in England’s title victories at the ODI World Cup 2019 and T20I World Cup 2022. However, as a captain, Buttler has failed to produce the same kind of results, with England failing to reclaim both titles in 2023 and 2024 respectively. While praising Buttler, McCullum said that Buttler has nothing to prove.

"I think Jos has had an unbelievable career. If he were to retire tomorrow, he goes down as arguably the greatest white-ball player England has ever had. He has nothing left to prove. I want him to get into a space in the next few years where he isn't trying to protect anything. He just goes out there and absolutely loves playing for England, loves leading the white-ball side and is able to get the most out of the talent around him," McCullum was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

McCullum emphasised that the upcoming champions trophy will remain the priority.

"That is my responsibility to keep pushing him towards that and keep reaffirming that message to him. Hopefully, he will be back from his injuries soon. The priority will be the Champions Trophy, so we are going to make sure he is ready for that," he said.

"It gives us some time to spark those conversations and formulate those structures and plans to marry up our beliefs and the language we are going to use with the team to get the most out of what sits in that dressing room," he stated.
