Shikhar Dhawan opens up about retirement call

News

Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has explained the reason behind his surprise announcement to retire from all forms of cricket. Last month, Dhawan made the announcement to retire from all forms of cricket as he did not have any "inspiration" to play domestic cricket or Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhawan, during his glittering career, played 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is for India. Dhawan scored 2315 runs in red-ball cricket, while he notched up 6793 runs in ODIs. In his T20I career, Dhawan scored 1759 runs.

"I didn't want to play domestic cricket, which I started playing at the age of 18 or 19 and I didn't have that inspiration from inside to play that (form of) cricket," Dhawan told PTI.

During his career, Dhawan was known for his big-hitting abilities and also became India’s 25th ODI captain, standing in for Rohit Sharma to lead India during a series against Sri Lanka in 2021. However, Dhawan’s career took a hit in the recent times. He last featured for India in December 2022. And, last year ahead of the ODI World Cup, Dhawan had to make the way for young gun Shubman Gill.

"If I look back, the last two years of my cricketing career, I wasn't playing much of international cricket and I was playing IPL to IPL, so I wasn't playing much of cricket (overall)," said Dhawan.

Dhawan’s IPL career was tremendously incredible as he played 222 matches and scored 6,769 runs, including two centuries and 51 half-centuries.
