England Test captain Ben Stokes has been officially ruled out of the first Test against Pakistan due to ongoing recovery from a hamstring injury, sustained during a match in The Hundred two months ago.

This development marks a significant moment for the England team, which will now be under the leadership of stand-in skipper Ollie Pope in Stokes’ absence. Last month as well, Pope led the team during a three-match home Test series against Sri Lanka, which England won 2-1.

Additionally, the first Test will see the exciting debut of fast bowler Brydon Carse. Carse heads into the first Test on the back of huge action, having played all five ODIs against Australia in the recently concluded series. As England named their playing XI ahead of the first Test, it also saw the return of opener Zak Crawley, who missed the Sri Lanka series due to a broken finger. Shoaib Bashir and Jack Leach will lead the spin attack. The first Test begins on Monday (October 7) in Multan.

England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jack Leach, Shoaib Bashir
