NZ-W vs SA-W: The White Ferns clinch maiden T20 World Cup title
In a historic moment for New Zealand Women, the team clinched their maiden T20I World Cup title by defeating South Africa Women by 32 runs in a thrilling final on Sunday at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. The team is on top of the world after a compelling battle with South Africa as they were able to secure an emphatic victory.
Asked to bat, New Zealand Women set a challenging target of 158 runs after losing five wickets in 20 overs. Amelia Kerr and Brooke Halliday laid the foundation for a big total with their scores of (43) and (38) respectively. Earlier, opener Suzie Bates started carefully, hitting 32 runs.
Chasing the target, South Africa Women struggled to build partnerships despite having a strong start. Their middle-order couldn’t stage a comeback that significantly contributed to their loss. Meanwhile, New Zealand bowlers were relentless, applying pressure from the outset. In the high-pressure situation, South African batters found it difficult to settle, and crucial wickets at regular intervals hampered their momentum.
New Zealand's success with the ball was largely attributed to the exceptional performances of Amelia Kerr and Rosemary Mair, who each claimed three wickets to restrict South Africa for 126/9 in 20 overs. Interestingly, New Zealand Women entered the T20I World Cup on the back of ten straight losses.
