“I was surprised”: Ponting hits back at Gambhir
Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has fired back at Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir after the latter asked the former to focus on his team. Gambhir’s criticism of Ponting came in the wake of Ponting’s comments on Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who both struggled hard to find form during India’s series whitewash at the hands of New Zealand. Ponting, in his comments, had highlighted as to how Indian batters were failing to get runs.
“I said I would be concerned (about his form),” Ponting told 7NEWS.
“But I think if you ask Virat, I’m sure Virat would be a little bit concerned that he hasn’t been able to make the same amount of hundreds as he has in previous years.
Ponting further clarified that he wasn’t taking any dig at Kohli and hoped for star’s strong return in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
"In no way was it a dig at him (Kohli). I actually followed it up by saying he's played well in Australia and he'll be keen to bounce back over here. So it's amazing how little things can get cut up, but he's a class player and he's played well in Australia in the past."
“I was surprised to read the reaction but knowing the coach, Gautam Gambhir ... he’s quite a prickly character, so I’m not surprised it was him who said something back," said Ponting.
