Morne Morkel provides update on Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami
Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel has dropped an update on injured Shubman Gill ahead of the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, scheduled to be begin on November 22 in Perth. Shubman Gill was absent at field practice on Saturday as he is believed to have fractured the thumb of his left hand while fielding in the slips. Morkel has said that a call on Gill’s selection for the first Test will be taken on the morning of the Test.
"Shubman is improving every day, obviously picked up a nasty blow in the mock game, in the squad game. I think with him it's going to be a day-to-day sort of process, fingers crossed for that improvement, but I think they'll wait, make a call with him up until the morning of the other day's match."
Morkel also issued an update on veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami by saying that he is being closely monitored. Shami recently made his return to competitive cricket, playing for Bengal in Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh and taking seven wickets. Having been on the sidelines for nearly a year with an ankle issue, it was a vigorous return for Shami.
"We are keeping a close eye on Shami. He is a world-class bowler. But also we need to understand that he has been out for almost a year. For us, it is a massive win that he is back playing. How we can give him the best support to find his feet again? Working closely with the people back home,” he said.
