“My father left his job for me”: Nitish Kumar

Indian batter Nitish Kumar Reddy has shared an emotional tale behind his journey to becoming a professional cricketer as it is rooted in a deeply personal story. In a video released by BCCI, Reddy recalled a pivotal moment in his life — a moment that shifted his perspective on cricket and his future.

Before that moment, cricket wasn’t something he took very seriously. Earlier, Reddy played cricket for fun but hadn’t fully grasped the dedication and sacrifices required to make it at the highest level. That was until he saw his father, in tears — a moment that would drastically change his life forever. Following his breakout performances at the IPL 2024, Reddy made his debut for India in Test and T20Is. Meanwhile, Reddy recalled as to how his father left the job for him. Reddy’s rise to prominence came during the IPL 2024, where he plundered 303 runs at a strike rate of 142.92.

"To be honest, I was not serious when I was young," he said in a video released by the BCCI.

"My father left his job for me and there has been a lot of sacrifice behind my story. One day, I saw him crying because of the financial problems we were facing, and I was like, this is not how you can be... that my father made the sacrifices and you play cricket just for fun.

"At that time, I became serious and I got the growth. I worked hard and it paid off. As a son from a middle-class family, I am so proud that my father is happy now. I gave my first jersey to him and saw the happiness in his face," he said.
