"I don't think he can survive as a Test opening batsman": Ricky Ponting on Sam Konstas

Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has shared his thoughts on rising star Sam Konstas, who made a remarkable debut during the recent Test series against India (Border-Gavaskar Trophy). Konstas, the young Australian opener, came out aggressively with his composed performance and took on superstar pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Konstas blasted Bumrah with his valiant knock, attempting ramp shots against him. He scored 60 off 65 in his debut knock in the fourth Test of the five-match series.

With his searing knocks, Konstas presented himself as a fitting opener for Australia in the longest format. However, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting feels that Konstas has a long road ahead if he is to establish his status as a opener. Moreover, Ponting highlighted that young batter won't survive long as an opener by playing aggressively.

“I don't think he can survive as a Test opening batsman playing like that all the time. So he will learn a lot from the first couple of games that he played as a batsman, but just as an international sportsman as well, I think he'll learn a lot. It's a big stage and he really enjoyed it at the MCG," Ponting said on the ICC Review.

Ponting maintained that young gun will take time to get used to the international cricket.

"But I've seen this happen a lot with young players. They come in, they get overawed by everything a little bit, and it takes them a few games or a few series just to actually work out who they are and who they need to be successful international players," he said.
