Ex-Indian player backs Bumrah instead of Gill for India’s Test captaincy

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired from Test cricket ahead of the five-match Test series against England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a huge task of selecting a perfect combination to replace both the stalwarts. The most challenging task for BCCI is to shortlist a befitting candidate to succeed Rohit Sharma as India’s Test skipper.
According to reports, Shubman Gill’s name has been doing the rounds as he remains the top contender to take up the top job. However, former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth feels that Shubman Gill is not the right candidate for captaincy. As per Srikkanth, tearaway pacer Jasprit Bumrah should be handed the captaincy reins.
"He (Gill) is not even a certainty in Test cricket. The captaincy should be given to Jasprit Bumrah, and if he is not fit or available for any match, then KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant should lead India," Srikkanth was quoted by Hindustan Times.
Another demanding task for India is to fill the No. 4 spot vacated by Virat Kohli with his Test retirement. Speaking on that, Srikkanth believes that KL Rahul could be the right choice to fill that spot.
"Coming to the question about India's next No. 4 in Test cricket, for me, KL Rahul should be given that position. He can be India's linchpin going forward in Test cricket. He has got the right technique, and the management should give him that fixed role," Srikkanth said.
