Gill ready to begin his reign as Test captain

The dawn of a new chapter in Indian Test cricket has arrived as Shubman Gill is set to officially begin his reign as leader of the Indian Test team. Gill would lead India under the leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir. The team is preparing for a high-stakes, five-match Test series against England, beginning June 20. With the series, the new ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle will also begin. Gill, long regarded as India’s future star, now steps up as the full-time Test captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who called time on his Test career last month. His appointment will surely mark a shift in leadership style. For the first time in so many years, India are set to play a Test series without two of the prominent players of the team – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who both retired from Test cricket last month.
India’s squad for the England series features a fresh look, as selectors look to the future while maintaining a strong base of experienced performers. Young players have been given the opportunity to prove their mettle against strong England. Players like Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Nitish Kumar have been handed the opportunity to announce themselves on the biggest stage.
While the spotlight will be on these newcomers, stalwarts like Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul will provide the valuable experience. Bumrah, who is one of the senior players in the team, remains a proven match-winner with his lethal pace, while R. Jadeja will be expected to aid the side in both batting and bowling departments. Facing England on their home turf has always been one of the most demanding tasks, but India, with a new-look squad, are expected to challenge England in their town.
This Test series offers more than just the game of cricket. It is a litmus test for Gill’s leadership. If successful, it could be the launchpad for a dominant era in Test cricket. For now, all eyes will be on the Test series and Shubman Gill.
India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
