India were put into a commanding position on day four of the ongoing first Test against England in Leeds after swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant blazed his second ton of the Test, becoming only the second wicketkeeper in the world to do so. He scored a beautiful 134 in the first innings, which was peppered with 12 boundaries and six sixes. And in the second innings, Pant, scoring 118, forged a 195-run partnership with KL Rahul, who scored his second-innings century, to help India hand England a target of 371.

Pant looked fearless in his approach, dominating England with sheer determination and unconventional batting. Lavishing praise on Pant, former Indian cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri said that Pant knows when to counterattack.

“People say Pant’s batting defies logic but there is an element of a sharp cricket brain behind it. He knows when to counterattack,” Shastri said on Sky Sports.

“It comes off on some occasions and on others it doesn’t, but if he had converted some of those seven dismissals in the 90s he would have had a double-digit number of Test hundreds,” said Shastri.

Shastri also hailed the partnership between Pant and Rahul, both of whom built India’s innings perfectly on day 4.

“There is plenty of food for thought, but India will be very happy after a technical masterpiece from Rahul and the flamboyance and exuberance that you can’t imagine from Pant,” Shastri said.
