ENG vs IND 2nd Test: Gill leads India past 300 as they eye mammoth total

Team India asserted firm control over England on day one of the second Test against England on Wednesday at Edgbaston. India were put on top by Shubman Gill, who blasted a century, while Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the side a strong start. Indian batters seemed to be taking full advantage of the conditions after being asked to bat by England skipper Ben Stokes.
England’s move to bowl first quickly backfired with Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been in good touch, racing to 87 before falling short of a well-deserved century. Meanwhile, with Jaiswal gone, Gill rose to the occasion, playing a captain’s knock and showing class and intent. Gill was well complimented by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who was unbeaten on 41. Both Gill and Ravindra Jadeja forged an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 99 runs. This was Gill's seventh Test century and second in as many games since taking over as India's Test captain.
Heading into day two (Thursday), India are in a dominant position, and they will look to build on their solid foundation. England, on the other hand, would be hoping for early breakthroughs to prevent India from accumulating a monumental first innings total. At stumps on day 1, India were 310/5.
