“Rishabh actually talks a lot about what he does”: Indian batting coach on Pant’s approach

India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has heaped praise on India’s top-order batters after their spectacular performances that secured India a crucial win in the second Test—levelling the five-match series 1–1. With the third Test at Lord’s beginning this Thursday, their form couldn’t come at a better time. Sitanshu lauded Indian batsmen’s ultra-aggressive approach and the mindset that has been absolutely perfect in breaking the back of the opposition.

“Every team will have some aggressive players who are very good at breaking the opposition’s momentum. So, someone like Jaiswal, who plays the way he plays; someone like Rishabh. But that does not mean that he doesn’t think. He does think; he does take decisions, and when it goes wrong, it looks bad. But when it goes right, people are happy: 'Oh, what an entertaining innings that was,” Sitanshu Kotak said during the press conference.

“So any team, I would think that would have a couple of players who are a little different in a batting lineup than others."

Kotak highlighted Pant’s mindset, saying he (Pant) doesn’t do too much during his innings and focuses on his game. Notably, Pant has scored two centuries so far in the series, being the third-highest run-scorer in the series with 342 runs.

"Rishabh actually talks a lot about what he does when he does (it). why he does (it). To me, he's spoken, but he's someone who doesn't like talking too much during his innings because he feels that that changes his mindset, and he takes the wrong decision. That's only when he's batting."

"Apart from that, he talks about other batters also, about himself also, and he does [properly plan] what he wants to do because it's not so easy to score Test hundreds or not so easy to be successful at this level without having any planning."
