Washington Sundar opens up about the handshake row

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has opened up about the handshake row that happened during India’s fourth Test match against England in Manchester. In the 4th Test, India, on the back of defiant innings from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, had staged a fabulous comeback to deny England a series win and draw the match. Meanwhile, the controversy erupted after Indian batters decided against shaking hands offered by Ben Stokes to call an early draw. Instead, Jadeja and Sundar wanted to continue batting to bring up their centuries, which left England players infuriated, leading to an exchange of words. Talking about the incident, Washington Sundar felt that it’s all very much common in any sport.

"I mean, it just happens in any sport, doesn't it? We've seen a lot of such things happen, not just in cricket, but in any sport. I mean, that's how sport is. It brings out a lot. I think it was just an experience for all of us, honestly," Sundar told Wisden.

Sundar also admitted that the incident played a major role in the positive outcome of the series, as India had won the fifth match to draw the series 2-2.

"One hundred per cent. You ask this to any player - that's exactly what you would hear. Especially in Test cricket, you want to be challenged because that's exactly what you expect every single day. And when the situation gets tough, the only thing that will help you get over it and come out successful is being really tough in your head," he added.
