"Selection is not in my hands": Mohammed Shami after being left out of Australia series

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has brushed aside fitness concerns, saying he wouldn't be participating in Ranji Trophy if he wasn't well. Shami was recently left out of India's white-ball squad for the upcoming tour of Australia, where India will play three ODIs and five T20Is.

He last featured for India at the 2025 Champions Trophy earlier this year, and since then he has been on the sidelines despite India having played the Test series against England, the Asia Cup and most recently a two-match Test series against West Indies. Taking a dig at selectors, Shami stated that the decision lies with the selectors.

"I have said this before. Selection is not in my hands. If there is a fitness issue, I shouldn't be here playing for Bengal. I think I do not need to speak on this and create a controversy. If I can play four-dayers [Ranji Trophy], I can also play 50-over cricket," Shami told media on Tuesday.

Recently, India's chief of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, had pointed out that there was no clarity on Shami's fitness.

“About giving an update, it's not my responsibility to give an update or ask for an update," Shami said.

"It's not my job to give updates on my fitness. My job is to go to the NCA [and] prepare and play matches. That's their matter who gives them updates or not. It's not my responsibility,” Shami added.
