Deepti Sharma, Shafali Verma inspire India to maiden World Cup crown
The Indian women created history by winning their first-ever ICC Women’s ODI World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. It was a moment of glory for Indian cricket as the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, displayed unflinching determination to script a memorable triumph.
Asked to bat, India put up an impressive total of 298/7 in 50 overs, riding on the back of solid contributions from their top and middle order. Shafali Verma led the charge with a scintillating 87 off 78 balls. Her opening partner, Smriti Mandhana, added a valuable 45, giving India a solid platform. Down the order, Deepti Sharma provided the perfect finishing touch with a crucial 58 off 58. Richa Ghosh also added 34 runs.
In their pursuit, South Africa got off to a decent start, but regular wickets halted their momentum. Captain Laura Wolvaardt stood tall amidst the collapse, scoring a classy 101, fighting a lone battle as the middle order continued to crumble under pressure.
India’s bowling attack, led by the all-rounder Deepti Sharma, was highly effective. Deepti starred with the ball as well, claiming five crucial wickets that dwindled South Africa’s rhythm. Shafali Verma also claimed two wickets as India bowled out South Africa for 246 in 45.3 overs.
