The Indian women's cricket team on Sunday won their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title after beating South Africa in the final by 52 runs. The title had long eluded the Indian side, but they finally managed to break the jinx and lift the trophy. It was a monumental moment for team India as their relentless struggle for the glory finally paid off.

The Indian side had tasted heartbreak in previous editions, notably as runners-up in 2005 and 2017, so this win had been long anticipated. Following the historic triumph, Indian megastar Virat Kohli lauded the team's performance and dubbed the victory an inspiration for generations to come.

"The girls have created history and I couldn’t be more proud as an Indian to see the hard work of so many years come to life finally. They deserve all the applause and a big congratulations to Harman and the whole team for achieving this historic feat. Also congratulations to the whole squad and the management for the work behind the scenes. Well done India. Enjoy the moment to the fullest. This will inspire generations of girls to take up the sport in our country. Jai Hind," Kohli wrote in his post on Instagram.

India, inserted to bat, posted a formidable total of 298/7 in 50 overs, with Shafali Verma powering the innings with a brisk 87 off 78 balls. Deepti Sharma contributed a steady 58. Defending the total, India bowled South Africa out for 246 in 45.3 overs, with Deepti Sharma returning with five wickets. For South Africa, Laura Wolvaardt waged a lone battle with a composed 101 off 98, but she lacked the support from other batters that contributed to South Africa's loss.
