Former Indian cricketer slams Iyer for throwing his wicket
India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer faltered in his outing against Bangladesh on Thursday after he splurged his wicket when he was playing on (19). Shreyas Iyer’s losing his wicket too early didn’t settle well with former Indian cricket Sunil Gavaskar who slammed Iyer for giving away his wicket too easily. India have been in the commanding position in the ongoing World Cup since they started their campaign by beating Australia in their first match of the tournament on October 8. There has been massive amount of batting perfection being demonstrated regularly by Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul who have helped India with runs in each of their past matches. Shreyas Iyer has been good with one half-century but at times he has fallen prey to the tactics from opposition bowlers. Shreyas Iyer comes to bat at No.4 position which had been a big talking point ahead of the start of the World Cup.
“He (Shreyas Iyer) lost his patience. He was batting on 19 and threw his wicket away. Shubman Gill (was batting on) fifty (52), threw his wicket away,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.
“Kohli never does that. He will seldom ever throw his wicket away. He makes you earn his wicket and that is exactly what you need. When he got to 70-80, he realised that he has an opportunity to get to a hundred and why not? Hundreds don’t come every day,” stated Gavaskar.
“You need to know how to get a hundred and it’s important for Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill. Shubman Gill is at least getting hundreds, Shreyas Iyer is not getting hundreds. He is getting his opportunities to bat at number 4 on pitches as good as these and attacks as toothless as this and he is throwing away the opportunity,” he added.
India will play their next match of the World Cup against New Zealand on Sunday at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. India have already secured four consecutive wins as they would now hope for their fifth straight victory in the World Cup campaign. India will be without their all-rounder Hardik Pandya who has been ruled out of the match against New Zealand due to an ankle injury.
