Warner announces his ODI retirement prior to his farewell Test
Australia’s sophisticated batter David Warner has confirmed his retirement from ODI cricket just two days prior to him playing his farewell Test match against Pakistan, scheduled to begin from January 3rd at Sydney Cricket Ground. The Southpaw, who had recently played for Australia in the World Cup that won the title, asserted to make himself available for the Champions Trophy 2025 if he is playing ‘decent cricket' and team needs him.
“I’m definitely retiring from one-day cricket as well,” Warner said at the SCG on Monday during the press conference. "That was something that I had said through the World Cup, get through that, and winning it in India, I think that’s a massive achievement.”
“So I’ll make that decision today as well, to retire from those forms, which does allow me to go and play some other leagues around the world and sort of get the one-day team moving forward a little bit. I know there’s a Champions Trophy coming up. If I’m playing decent cricket in two years’ time and I’m around and they need someone, I’m going to be available.”
David Warner ends his glittering ODI career with 6932 runs from the 161 ODIs. He has amassed 22 centuries and 33 half-centuries to his tally of runs in this format. Warner made his ODI debut for Australia in 2009 against South Africa. David Warner finishes as the sixth-highest run-getter in men’s ODI for Australia. David Warner will continue to play in T20I format and is expected to be seen at the ILT20 with the Dubai Capitals.
