Former Indian cricketer’s verdict on Rahane & Pujara’s Test future

Indian Test veterans Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara have been out of the scheme of things from India’s Test assignments, having been away from the proceedings for long. Cheteshwar Pujara last made his appearance for India during the World Test Championship in London where India lost to Australia.

Ajinkya Rahane, on the other hand, hasn’t played for India since West Indies series in July of 2023. Recently, India announced their 16-member squad for the five-match home series against England, slated to get underway from January 25. But, there was no inclusion of Rahane and Pujara in India's squad. The exclusion of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara from the squad has raised eyebrows. Reacting to the exclusion of both veterans, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra stated that their chapter in Test cricket has been closed.

“The squad is along the expected lines. We had expected Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara not to be there. I feel that chapter is closed. If you did not pick them in South Africa, that was the last opportunity to pick them. If you did not pick them there, you are not going back to them,” said Chopra on his YouTube channel.

“Pujara scored a double century last week. He is the saint of cricket. He will keep scoring because he does not score runs only for selection. Half the world scores runs for selection. He plays cricket just because he likes batting. He scores runs because he likes scoring runs. So Pujara will continue to score runs and break all records in first-class cricket. I think he has already scored 61 first-class centuries. He will make 100. He will not stop. He will not retire at all,” stated Chopra.
