India’s startling win against Australia at The Gabba
Team India, on this day in 2021, astounded Australia by bouncing back to record the Test series win by beating Australia in the fourth Test match at the Gabba, Brisbane. India won the four-match Test series 2-1 to shatter Australia’s pride and stamp their authority. India were led by Ajinkya Rahane in the absence of Virat Kohli who had returned home following personal emergency. This was India's first victory at The Gabba.
Ajinkya Rahane led a young-looking squad, with the likes of Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar and Mohammed Siraj, to complete the 3-wicket win in the 4th Test. In the first Test, India had been bowled out for 36, and returning from that blow was hugely impressive for India who had startled everyone in the cricket fraternity.
The third match didn’t produce any result after ending in draw, while Australia had crushed India to an eight-wicket defeat in the first game, taking all expectations along with them to win the series. However, India made their strong comeback to go on to win second and fourth game to finish the series 2-1.
In the fourth game, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur had landed big knocks with their scores of (62) and (67) respectively in India’s first innings in response to Australia’s first innings total of (369). Australia, in their second innings had scored (294), rendering a target of (328) for India. Chasing the target of (328), India’s youngsters Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant scoring (91) and (89*) powered India to a historical win.
