Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga banned from playing two-match Test series against Bangladesh

Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga had surprised everyone after coming out of Test retirement to play in Sri Lanka’s two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting 22nd March. But, his participation in Sri Lanka’s Test squad remained temporary after he was suspended by ICC for breaching article 2.8 of the player’s code of conduct, which relates to showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.
The incident took place during the 37th over of the third and final ODI match of Sri Lanka’s recently concluded three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. Hasaranga snatched his cap from one of the umpires and ridiculed the umpiring in the match. Following which, Hasaranga was slapped with a 50 percent fine and three demerit points.
This ban of Hasaranga by ICC comes on the hills of earlier one that he faced during the first T20Is against Afghanistan, therein he was banned for next two T20Is. The latest addition of three demerit points has taken the tally to eight demerit points. Hasaranga would now either miss two Tests or four ODIs or four T20Is whatever comes first. Had Hasaranga not come out of Test retirement now, he would have missed Sri Lanka’s four games at the T20I World Cup 2024.
