Delhi Capitals suffer defeat as Curran, Livingstone show elegance
It turned out to be a stiff start for Delhi Capitals in their opening game of the Indian Premier League against Punjab Kings on Saturday at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur in Chandigarh, after they fell to their four-wicket defeat. After having a steady start, Delhi Capitals lost their middle-order batters in quick succession.
It was a little bit of scoring from David Warner and Shai Hope in the top order, scoring with their scores of (29) and (33) respectively, that released some pressure. Down the order, a quickfire from Abishek Parol (32*) guided the team to a fighting total of 174/9 in (20) overs. Rishabh Pant returning to the proceedings after 15 months started off promisingly, but failed to carry on, losing his wicket for (18).
Punjab Kings, chasing the target, saw opener Jonny Bairstow going back for (9), smashing two boundaries. However, Shikhar Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh brought the team back in order, setting the platform for their win. Down the line, Sam Curran played gutsy knock of (63) runs, ensuring team’s victory. Later, aggressive Liam Livingstone made (38) unbeaten, taking the team over the line with four balls to spare.
