BBL introduces multi-year deals to smoothen overseas players’ availability

Cricket Australia, in a new step, has introduced multi-year contracts in an effort to rope in overseas players for longer periods. Big Bash Clubs will now be able to sign an overseas player on a multi-year deal to a maximum of three years.

From the next season onwards, players signing multi-year deals will have to commit themselves to the entire season. The new contract will encourage overseas players to make themselves available at Big Bash League.

However, in the multi-year contract, player signing a contract before draft, however long the duration, won’t be able to be retained by their former club. This will be giving the players liberty to negotiate directly with the team of their choice.

The step has been taken to limit the unavailability of players, amid the emergence of other T20 leagues around the world such as SA20 and United Arab Emirates (ILT20). It becomes incredibly difficult for BBL Clubs to avail the services of robust overseas players in the second half of BBL due to their commitment in other leagues.

"We are excited to introduce this new contracting mechanism for the upcoming WBBL and BBL seasons. We have worked closely with clubs and the ACA to continue developing and enhancing the Big Bash, and a key focus has been ensuring the best players continue to compete in the Big Bash, and for longer periods,” BBL general manager Alistair Dobson said.

"The opportunity for international players to ink multi-year deals with teams not only strengthens the League's global appeal but also provides clubs with greater stability and strategic planning capabilities."
