Ben Stokes bows out of England’s T20I World Cup defence

England all-rounder and Test skipper Ben Stokes has dropped out of the upcoming T20I World Cup in June. Ben Stokes scoring winning runs played a pivotal role in England’s title win at the T20I World Cup in 2022, but he is set to miss the upcoming high-profile event in West Indies and USA.
Stokes’ critical role with an unbeaten half-century had helped England clinch a victory over Pakistan in final at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Opting out of defending England’s title, Ben Stokes has decided to put his complete focus on getting himself to the full fitness in order to be able to play as a proper all-rounder for England. Stokes was poised to be named in England's squad for the T20I World Cup, but his decision has put brakes on his availability.
Stokes recently made his return to bowling, following a long absence due to a knee injury. He did not bowl since the Ashes last year due to the knee injury, but after undergoing a successful knee surgery in late November in 2023, Stokes returned to bowling.
"I'm working hard and focusing on building my bowling fitness back up to fulfil a full role as an allrounder in all formats of cricket. Opting out of the IPL and the World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that allows me to be the allrounder I want to be for the foreseeable future,” Stokes said in a statement released by the ECB on Tuesday.
"The recent Test tour of India highlighted how far behind I was from a bowling point of view after my knee surgery and nine months without bowling. I'm looking forward to playing for Durham in the County Championship before the start of our Test summer. I wish Jos [Buttler], Motty [Matthew Mott] and all the team the best of luck in defending our title."
