CA unveils major plans at WBBL
In a major overhaul at the WBBL, Cricket Australia has decided to shorten the tournament to 40 games, bringing it in level with BBL. Since its inception back in 2015-2016, WBBL had 56 games and each team played 14 games, but with new changes each team will be playing 10 games.
CA, in its new changes, announced the introduction of state-based T20 tournament, in order to not see any depletion in women’s games. It will also provide more opportunities to domestic players with rise in payments. The T20 tournament is expected to be played alongside WNPL (Australia’s 50-over women’s competition). The announcement is part of the 10-year Women and Girls action plan designed to bump up investment and participation in women’s cricket.
This initiative has also garnered a lot of support from players as it will help in chalking out a fitting schedule as per matches. Australian superstar Ellyse Perry expressed her delight over the initiative.
"Australian cricket has been at the forefront of the growth in women's sport providing some of the best opportunities for players with resourcing and remuneration and it's reassuring to know this commitment will not only be sustained, but greatly enhanced over the next ten years," said Perry.
"With viewing audiences increasing, the public appetite for women's sport is now indisputable and we would love to see major stadiums filled with fans for our international and WBBL games and more girls inspired to play cricket. It is also extremely important that the increased interest in women's sport is reflected in sponsorship and broadcast deals, and I hope this plan will continue to drive this growth so that women's cricket continues to thrive."
