Mahmadullah stood tall to assist Bangladesh secure a 2-wicket victory over Sri Lanka on Saturday at Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas. The nail-biting finish saw Bangladesh obtain a boisterous start in their opening match of the T20I World Cup. Mahmadullah remained unbeaten on (16 off 13).

Bangladesh, chasing a modest target, had to overcome early blows, after getting off to a shaky start. Sri Lanka made the work hard for Bangladesh when they needed 25 runs off 5 overs with five wickets in hand. But, Mahmadullah unfazed by Sri Lanka’s bowling attack stroked winning runs as Bangladesh romped to victory at the end of 19th over.

Bangladesh lost both of their openers Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar for (3) and (0) respectively. Litton Das brought the stability, keeping calm to play a 36-run knock. And a classy knock from Towhid Hridoy put the team on course for victory.

Pinned to bat, Sri Lanka limped to put up a competitive total, but thanks to some impressive performance from their opener Pathum Nissanka who blitzed (47 off 28). Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis were kept in check by Bangladesh bowlers, eventually succumbing to the pressure.

Down the order, Sri Lanka’s innings was anchored by Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka, who dragged Sri Lanka to a notional total, scoring (21) and (19) respectively. This is Sri Lanka’s second defeat on the trot, having already been beaten by South Africa in their opening game.
