South Africa flatten Afghanistan to advance to their maiden T20I World Cup final

In a historic moment, South Africa have made it to their first men’s World Cup final after tearing down pumped up Afghanistan in the semi-final 1 of the ongoing T20I World Cup on Thursday at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad. South Africa blew away Afghanistan by nine wickets in a one-sided contest.

Afghanistan, deciding to bat first, struggled against South African bowlers and were bowled out for a mere 56 runs in just 11.5 overs - the lowest total in the history of T20I knockout stages. South African bowlers displayed remarkable accuracy and discipline, with Tabraiz Shamsi and Marco Jansen claiming three wickets each, while Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje took two wickets each to knock down Afghanistan.

In reply, South Africa flew past the total in 8.5 overs, scoring 60 runs for the loss of just one wicket. Quinton de Kock lost his wicket early on for 5, but Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram remained unbeaten on 29 and 23 respectively to ensure South Africa went past the total safely.

Afghanistan had entered the game on the back of a rambunctious win against potent Australia in the Super Eight, but it’s been incredibly surprising to see Afghanistan being blown away by proteas so easily. Afghanistan's freefall began after opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was taken out by Marco Jansen for a three-ball duck. Azmatullah Omarzai was the top-scorer for Afghanistan with 10 off 12 deliveries. It’s come as a sad end to Afghanistan’s campaign as they failed to put up a strong fight against South Africa.
