AUS vs IND 1st Test Day 4: India secure famous win over confident Australia
In an emphatic demonstration of dominance, India secured a comfortable win over Australia, beating the host by 295 runs on day four of the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Tuesday in Perth. The Australian side, chasing a daunting target of 534 runs, was bowled out for just 238 runs, with Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj leading the charge. India, making their strong comeback after failing to perform in their batting in the first innings, kept Australia under immense pressure till the end.
The match began with India electing to bat, but they found themselves in early trouble, posting just 150 runs in their first innings. Their highly skilled batters such as Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel could not deliver with the bat, with Australian bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins leading Australia's pace attack and toppling India’s top order. Australia restricted India to a modest total.
However, the real collapse began when Australia took their turn to bat. They could only muster 104 runs in their first innings. India’s stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah put in an outstanding effort, shrugging off Australia’s formidable batters. Key Australian batters like Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith struggled to get going, falling cheaply under the pressure of Bumrah’s relentless attack.
With a commanding lead, Indian batters returned to the crease for their second innings with renewed confidence as they piled on a massive 487 runs. India declared their innings for 487/6. The backbone of the innings was provided by Yashasvi Jaiswal (161) and Virat Kohli (100*), both of whom scored centuries to take India to a dominant position.
